A mobile pizzeria

January 29th, 2013 · Food, Uncategorized

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a truck like this coming through your street? Just once a week would do …

It’s pretty impossible not to gasp at the first sight of Del Popolo, a mobile pizzeria that features a 5000 ld Stefano Ferrara wood burning oven (capable of producing 72 pizzas) in a modern glass enclosed exhibition kitchen.

Mobile pizza truck

Del Popolo is a mobile pizzeria that roams the streets of San Francisco in search of hungry people in the mood for rustic, Neapolitan-inspired pizza.

The playfulness of Alexander Calder

January 24th, 2013 · Art, Jewelry

I am a big fan of Alexander Calder. To be honest I can’t say I really like his jewelry, but I love the forms and shapes he uses. I’m jealous of the playfulness of his designs …

Alexander calder in his atelier.

Alexander Calder in his atelier

In the early thirties Alexander Calders friendship with artists such as Miró, Leger, Arp and Mondrian, had an impact on his decision to stop making figurative pieces. From that time on he developed a colorful, abstract language for his designs.

Necklaces by Calder

Besides his large sculptures and famous “mobiles”, Alexander Calder created unique jewelry pieces. Small sculptures to wear never reproduced for the masses.

messing Brooch by AlexanderCalder

His first creations were small accessories for her sister’s dolls, made from wire. Later on he refined his jewels, producing them in silver and gold, but he also used other materials such as brass, leather cord, colored glass pebbles, and anything else that inspired him.

Silver cufflinks and a snowstorm

January 21st, 2013 · Jewelry, Life, Meanwhile in our atelier, My Work

Once a year we visit a small gem fair in Dusseldorf, Germany. And this weekend that’s what we did. Saturday night after closing of the atelier we left with the dogs towards Düsseldorf.
We always stay over night in a hotel near the edge of town so the next day we do not have to drive so far.

On Sunday morning we always start with a hike in the hills and forests around Dusseldorf, which was even more beautiful this time because of the wonderful white snowy landscape. Fun for us but especially for the dogs who had to spend a large part of the day in the car. Because we have been coming for years to this fair, we know most of the exhibitors and all in all it is doing business in a very relaxed way.

And this is our loot … carnelian, red coral, hematite, jasper and serpentine …

colorful semi precious beads

The beauty of it all … I wonder; what shall I create out of it this time? The way home was not easy … heavy snowfall and icy roads …

What else happened in our atelier last week? Among other things we received a commission for silver cufflinks. In case you wonder about this … yes we get regular demand for custom-made cufflinks. The wish of this client was … silver, sleek rectangular cufflinks with a rim and a monogram.

Here is the result …

Once upon a time …

Chasing ghosts!

Jan and I live in a very small community of only a few houses in the countryside of The Netherlands. On New Years Eve we have an old tradition among neighbors to gather at the church after midnight to whish each other a happy New Year. Our house is right behind the church, so we always go.

Dutch old church

Alternately people ring the 3 bells of the belfry in order to chase the ghosts away and to welcome the New Year.

a Dutch 3 bell belfy

Another rather new tradition is the New Year’s drink, established about 7 years ago. Each year, 14 neighbors come together to toast the New Year. Last Friday it was my turn to organize this small get together.

Our house is quite small so when everything was arranged with all the stools to seat 14 people, the living room was chock full. But it looked inviting with lots of candles and the smell of fragrant hyacinths.  It was a pleasant evening and when the last guests went home it was well after midnight. A moment after the last guests left there was the sound of bells in the silent night … one of the neighbors rang the bell of the belfry on the way home.

I was not in top form the next day … our atelier was opened and it was pretty busy with customers. Which is all very well but at 6 in the evening I was ready for a delicious spicy homemade soup and looked forward to a long episode of Downton Abbey on TV.

The soup was delicious, I share the recipe with you …

homemade tomato soup

INDIAN TOMATO SOUP

Preparation Time – 10 minutes
Cooking Time – 20 minutes
Serves – 2

Ingredients

1 tablespoon ghee or salted butter
1 small red onion, finely chopped
3 bay leaves
1 inch stick of cinnamon, lightly crushed
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon garam masala
2 teaspoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt or to taste
6 peppercorns
250ml vegetable stock
2 x 400g tins diced tomatoes

Method

Heat the ghee/butter over low heat in a heavy based saucepan. Add the onion, bay leaves, peppercorn and cinnamon. Fry until the onions are soft and caramelized. Add the cumin, garam masala, sugar and tomatoes. Stir and bring to boil. Simmer for 15 minutes on low heat.

Remove from heat and strain the soup by passing it through a sieve. Using a metal or wooden spoon, push against the solids in the sieve to extract as much liquid as you can. Discard what is left in the sieve. Season the liquid with salt and return to heat for 2 minutes. Garnish with fresh cream or coriander before serving piping hot.

Very special birdhouse

January 15th, 2013 · Animals, Ceramics, Design

It’s cold today and snow is predicted! No weather to think about birdhouses. However, today I like to show you this fun and inventive idea of designer Klaas Kuiken.

In an effort to help solve the shrinking bird population in urban areas, Dutch designer Klaas Kuiken collaborated with Vogelbescherming (a Dutch bird association) to create the Birdhouse Roof Tile.

klaas kuiken ceramic birdhouse

The Birdhouse Roof Tile is designed in such a way to provide more nesting places for birds within the city. Since birds often look to nest within the roofs of houses, Kuiken attached an archetypal birdhouse onto a standard roof tile.

The ‘birdhouse tiles’ are produced …

Some birds like to nest close together, so it is recommended to place multiple birdhouses.

Meanwhile in our Atelier …

January 10th, 2013 · Jewelry, Latest Design, Meanwhile in our atelier, My Work, Uncategorized

The pieces I show on my blog are not the only jewelry pieces we make. The jewelry which does not make it on the blog are the pieces I forget to take a picture of! Before you know it the piece of jewelry is already at the customer.

This  engagement ring is the latest commission we have worked on. And although we’re not going to continue this design ring, I especially made a picture … because I find it beautiful …

wedding ring made of wood

The wish of the customer was … a wooden engagement ring made of two different kinds of wood with a minimal amount of silver or gold. We explained to the customer that a wooden model made entirely without gold or silver is not an option, because the ring would break very quickly. Even though this model is made with a silver band, we can not guarantee it for eternity and that is the reason we will not include the ring in our collection. Very unfortunate because  I think it’s beautiful.

A wedding ring that we have in our collection for  a long time is FOREVER. It’s a wedding ring inlaid with wood, has an absolute eternal value, and it is a perfectly timeless design.

17th century portraits by Hendrik Kerstens

January 8th, 2013 · Photography, Uncategorized

I am sure I mentioned the beautiful photos of  Hendrik Kerstens on my blog before but can’t find it in my older posts. Anyway here he is again …

When Hendrik Kerstens decided to dedicate himself entirely to photography in 1995, he turned to a model very near at hand: his daughter Paula.

Daugher of Hendrik Kerstens

He wanted to document all the important moments in her life, to ‘be there’, to capture something of the fleeting moments that fade from memory all too quickly.

sunburned Daughter of Hendrik Kerstens

One day Paula came back from horseback riding. She took off her cap and I was struck by the image of her hair held together by a hair-net.”

Hendrik Kerstens

“It reminded me of the portraits by the Dutch masters and I portrayed her in that fashion.”

Hendrik Kerstens

After that Hendrik started to do more portraits in which he refers to the paintings of that era.
