This afternoon we are packing the car, so we can leave real early tomorrow morning to show our jewelry  at  the Art Fair Buitengewoon Kunst op Nienoord.

The collections reflect the love for stripes and chocolate licorice and peach candy, the balance between psychedelia and harmony, the 70s classic Great Gatsby movie and 90s rap music and lines and silhouettes drawn with a black marker.

and Silversmithing … in the picture silversmith Hiroshi Suzuki at work raising or forging a silver bowl.

One starts with hammering on a circle of Sterling Silver so the silver raises, in between the hammering rounds the silver is heated by a flame to make it soft again. One bowl takes days of hammering.

My partner Jan Kerkstra and myself are besides Jewelry makers also Silversmiths. We do sterling silver pieces like candle holders, silver bekers and Christening spoons mostly made on order.
The Fries Museum located in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands carries 5 big silver pieces in their permanent collection, made by Jan and me .

Last week we made a few more jewelry pieces. These pieces are the last ones we are making for the Jewelry Presentation we are having coming weekend. Two new brooches by my partner Jan Kerkstra of Atelier The Jewelry Story and the long necklace is a made by me.

The necklace is made for a lady who wanted a really long necklace; something with red, maybe silver and she wanted to wear it on a dark blue dress … hope she likes it.

Only a few weeks ago the beautiful and very informative blog of Montserrat Lacomba had a post about Tore Svenssons latest work; his brooches. Today I like to show you some of his older work.

This very graphic necklace is made of steel. Not something you wear everyday, and maybe not something you wear ever. But I love Svensson’s approach to treating flat surfaces of geometric shapes. ( Photo via Klimt )

Tore Svensson only makes a few steel bowls a year. These bowls are raised- that is beaten with a hammer, into this shape, over a steel stake. It is a painstaking slow process.

For nearly two decades he has been making the same simple form: the few bowls he makes each season hardly vary in size and form from their predecessors.

Inspiration was the picture frame Museum de Buitenplaats carries as their logo. We borrowed the frame during the designing process and here the picture frame sits in our Atelier.

The “Schaukelwagen” is made of solid beech and plywood and has rubber wheels.

It can be flipped one way to use as a child-sized play car or tilted upside-down to become a rocking chair.

Babel – their farm restaurant, a former old cowshed has been converted into a cool milk-white restaurant.  All the food there is fresh and comes either from their garden or from neighboring farms.

The pattern in the blanket and table runner SCHUUR, which means BARN, was inspired by the ancient wood barns that Mara Skujeniece has admired since childhood in her homeland Latvia.

The rhythms of the slats and boards, the structures, the graphic image, are all worked out in drawings and watercolors from memory.

Both pieces were produced by the Audax Textiel Museum in Tilburg, The Netherlands. This commission took Mara to the question “how can I use the same rhythms and drawings in designing textile?”

Mara Skujeniece is the founder of Studio Skujeniece, through which she designs furniture and interior goods. Mara is based in Amsterdam and currently teaches at Design Academy Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
