As a conceptual designer, Sophie balances between art and design.

Sophie’s new collection is a wonderful series of scarves, titled “Undiscovered Wonders of the World”.

The scarves are digitally printed on crepe de chine and silk velvet. The project came about with the cooperation of the Dutch Audax Textile Museum, Tilburg and CATDigital in Glasgow, Scotland.

The scarves are beautiful fairytale like landscapes inspired by Celtic, Norwegian, Indian and Greek ancient stories.

Here in Friesland, the province where I live, complete pastures are still under water, due to the enormous amount of rain. Lucky for us our little house is built on a mound; so we are save from the water …

Will it ever become winter you think? I have not as many birds in my garden as other years and you know what? My Forsythia already has a few tiny flowers !

Since this week I hung up some food for the birds and several times I spotted a red-spotted woodpecker eating from the peanuts. During the big storm the birds swung dangerously back and forth. And often all the food was blown from the tree.

High time to buy a nice sturdy house like this …

With the help from fresh young Dutch design talents the brand is now reinventing itself with a new series of porcelain called BlueD1653.

Three master painters designed in collaboration with designers Arian Brekveld, Chris Koens and Damian O’Sullivan as many as 22 new pieces. The collection is modern, without losing the tradition and craftsmanship of the Delftware.

The name: Blue D1653; Blue for Delftware, 1653 for the founding year of Royal Delft and D for design.

Call it contemporary nostalgia, new originality or the purest form of Dutch Design …

The sun was shining especially for me today so I made a nice long walk with the dogs. A Coffee tasted like coffee again so I declare myself cured from this awful flu.

Reading was all I did this last week. In this time of year, many magazines have a Christmas edition twice as thick as normal so that was nice.

I also discovered a great new magazine; called PARK and the first issue came out last week.

PARK is best described as a journalistic glossy. Maybe an idea for under the XMass tree?  At the moment the subscription is very affordable. More info here.

Sassafras Design is the Etsy shop of Claudia Zandstra-Burkhard. Claudia is a Dutch textile designer and works mainly with wool, silk and linen. Occasionally she also makes bags, including this really nice red POODLE bag, which I have a crush on.

This is PEARL “tinkling” beaded bangles. The design by me, Marion Pannekoek.

These are very festive bangles available individually in sterling silver or black oxidized silver. More info in our online store and of course they are also for sale in our Atelier.

She just realised FOLDING FOR PEACE, a paper garden in Nagasaki, Japan.

“An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. Inspired by this popular belief, the garden Folding For Peace is the physical remain of a wish for world peace. All the plants that compose the garden are folded out of white paper.”

The projects of Anouk are very divers. They range from fashion projects like this SEASON CHANGE dress …

to  fairytale like WINTER & SUMMER bridges …

The realisation of the bridges is planned for the end of 2012 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Trained as a gold and silversmith the primary basis of all her work is driven by the medium of metal and it’s unique working properties.

Cinnamon specialises in using 3D computer modelling and rapid manufacturing processes in conjunction with traditional gold and silversmithing techniques to produce work that explores the intersection between technology, the machine and the hand-made.

Maybe that’s  why I hear lately about architects, especially women, who start their own shop. Not a shop for architectual design but more like a career switch…

Like for instance Elena she is an architect and just opened her own shop, for women’s wear in Bergamo Italy.

I know of this shop through Lois aka 13Threads of the gorgeous handmade clothing, because Materiaprima carries the beautiful hats Lois makes.

The other architect is Dutch Eva van Dongen who just started her really nice online venture Orphan Socks. As the website tells us:

“ORPHAN SOCKS stands for exceptional ordinariness for simple design with a certain degree of cool elegance but always unique and sometimes funny”

Orphan Socks carries beautiful design, for him…
