Ito Hirotoshi is a sculptor from Japan who finds the stones he works with in a riverbed near his home. I think he tries to make us laugh and altough stones
are hard he wants us to see the warmth and homor in them.

What the hell is conceptual jewely?

Well.. that’s an ongoing discussion of course but I think the work of the Swedish contemporary jeweler Adam Grinovich is a good example of conceptual jewely.

Horizon Field

The Britisch artist Antony Gormley is famous for his spectacular projects in archetypal natural landscapes. When I first came across his work I immediately liked his work. The project he has taken on now, Horizon Field is in Austria and consists of 100 life-size, solid cast iron figures of the human body spread over an area of 150 square kilometers.

In collaboration with Kunsthaus Bregenz, Antony Gormley is realizing a unique project in the mountains of Vorarlberg. Horizon Field will be the first art project of its kind erected in the mountains and the largest landscape intervention in Austria to date.

There is enough time to go and see the project, it will remain in the mountains of Australia until April 2012. Please take a look overhere for lots more photos.

Balloons are magical… don’t you think?… the small colorfull balloons reminding you of happy times in childhood. Often big balloons fly above our house and I wave at the people in the basket… the movement is slow and the weather is allways nice otherwise the balloons would not fly…

The artist Maggie Mailer paints colorfull paintings full of balloons.
At the moment there is a solo show of Maggie in the Ferring Gallery in Pittsfield Massachusets. Maggie herself tells us about the paintings…

With great pleasure Jan and I visited last year’s Open Art Fair in Utrecht.

The Open Art Fair is a fair with galleries from home and abroad.
This is what it says on their site: Whether you like painting or sculpture, glass, ceramics or jewelry – on the Open Art Fair one finds all expressions of art.
The fair is from September 8 till September 12.

Fine Art Photography Gallery Eduarte Planting in Amsterdam specializes in 20th century and contemporary photography. At the art fair they show among others, work by the Dutch photographer Marie Cécile Thijs.

The S.P.A.S. Gallery founded in 1990, is one of the oldest galleries of St. Petersburg. This gallery shows work of Russian artist Alexander Gerasimov.

Yesterday I discoverd a surprisingly nice gallery on the internet.

The Lilja Zakirova Gallery was founded in 1993 and is located in the historic town of Heusden, near Rotterdam. The gallery represents contemporary artists from Russia. Lilja Zakirova selects its artists on a personal basis without taking into account the issues of the day.

Especially the Russian digital artist, Katerina Belkina makes striking work …

Once upon a time…

Once upon a time I lived in Watkinsville, Georgia, U.S.A. It was the Deep South and really rural country. For someone like me living until then in the city of Amsterdam, there were quit some things getting used to. Like rattlesnakes living under your porch, or a redneck neighbor carrying a gun at all times. It was tuff and hot, nature was beautiful but I think nobody wanted to live there, the housing was cheap and lots of artists were living around us.

Potters, methalsmiths, a woodworker and most important; my good friend René Guerin a painter.

René could not only make beautiful paintings, she had the biggest vegetable garden you ever saw and she taught me, a city girl from Amsterdam, how to grow a garden and how to cook from such a garden. After all those years I am still in contact with René and as you can see she is still making lovely paintings.

These are the latest drawings in sand by Jim Denevan, the versatile American artist that I’ve wrote about twice before, here and here.

Jim Denevan makes temporary drawings on sand, earth and ice that are eventually erased by waves and weather.

20×200 an online art gallery

The other day I came across 20×200, an amazing online gallery full of prints of photo’s and work on paper. The art gallery was launched in 2007 and offers a large selection of archival- quality artwork starting at just $ 20. Take a look it is really worth it…

One artist I discovered in 20×200 is Amy Casey. I find her work very intense and beautiful in a strange way .

Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, Amy Casey began studying art at the School of the Performing and Visual Arts in high school, and went on to focus on painting at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

While there, she received a fellowship to the Yale Summer School of Art and Music in Norfolk, CT. Amy was awarded many times and has won many prizes with her excellent artwork.

Casey is represented by Zg Gallery in Chicago and Michael Rosenthal Gallery in San Francisco. Currently she lives, paints and makes etchings in Cleveland, Ohio

Sculpture Garden Anningahof

Sunday we went to Anningahof a sculpture garden near Zwolle, The Netherlands. A beautiful, sometimes daring collection of sculptures on 6 acres of land.

Work by Gerard Groenewoud (looks very surrealistic, also because of the sinister clouds)

If you’re walking on the estate Anningahof and see the dozens of sculptures, you can hardly imagine that once cattle grazed here.

In the former working farm of his parents, son Hib Anninga started the great sculpture garden six years ago.

The plans for the sculpture came when he was working with a landscape architect on a design for the garden.
