Thursday May 17, 2012 we are joining Buitengewoon Kunst op Nienoord in Leek The Netherlands. Its an Artist Fair where about 50 artists and designers will show their work.

Plus coming weekend (and the next) we, among many more craftspeople, artists and designers will participate in the yearly Open Atelier Route Opsterland.

So now I’m putting together a collection of jewelry to take to the Fair on Thursday. It’s an outside affair in the beautiful garden belonging to Borg Nienoord. Lets hope the weather will be sort of decent!

This small silver brooch, with the semi precious gemstone Agate, will be among many other pieces of jewelry we are going to show Thursday at Buitengewoon Kunst op Nienoord.

Born in Jilin, China, Beili Liu now lives and works in Austin, Texas, USA. She is an Associate Professor of Art at the University of Texas at Austin.

Thread, paper, incense, wood, salt, water, these simple things and compounds are the main materials which Beili Liu uses for her art.

Last week while hunting for a blogpost for the Latest Story blog I came across a photo of the studio of Mari Andrews …

… and remembered the image from about a year ago when I placed it on my Tumblr. This time I did follow up the link and discoverd the amazing work of this artist with the great looking studio.

The work of the American Mari Andrews has evolved out of years of drawing and obsessive collecting. Through sculpture she weaves these two actions together.

Honeycomb by Mari Andrews, bark, acrylic and various objects.

Wire, pine needles, branches and other linear material carry on the drawing practice while moving the work into the sculptural realm.  She spents a lot of time gathering, cleaning and storing collected objects, sometimes man-made, mostly natural.

“My work in handmade paper concentrates on the membrane of the page as an expressive form in its own right, not simply as a support. To me, a sheet of paper represents a unique conjunction of the human capacities for making and for communicating. The objects I make are the result of thinking through the implications of this dialogue between material and experience.”

Jan and I are planning on going to visit this exhibition. It’s a large overview of his work, mostly his mobiles and sculptures. I am looking forward to it, I think his work is very inspring.

American-born artist Alexander Calder (1898–1976) is celebrated for his mobiles, stabiles, paintings, objets d’art and jewelry. Did you know that Alexander Calder began making jewelry for his sister’s dolls at age 6?

During his lifetime Calder  produced 1,800 works of jewelry; each one unique, designed by him and made by his own hands. Jewelry made of brass, silver, and gold body ornaments, often embellished with found objects such as beach glass, ceramic shards, and wood.

Many of his jewelry pieces were made as personal gifts for the artist’s family and friends.

Even if he had made nothing else—even if he hadn’t invented wire sculpture, the mobile, performance art—we would look at this body of work as truly remarkable. He would be famous as a studio art jeweler.
